Hysteroscopy in Greece

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that lets a gynaecologist look directly inside the uterus and cervical canal, and treat many problems in the same session. It is one of the most useful tests when investigating female infertility or preparing for IVF.

What is Hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy uses a hysteroscope, a thin telescope with a light and camera, which is passed gently through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. No cuts are made. The uterus is filled with a sterile fluid so the doctor can see the lining clearly on a screen.

It can be diagnostic, to examine the uterine cavity and cervical canal and take a small tissue sample (biopsy), or operative, where fine instruments passed through the hysteroscope are used to treat what is found, such as removing a polyp. Often both happen in one session.

How the procedure works

  1. Consultation. Your gynaecologist reviews your history and scans, explains the procedure and agrees the type of anaesthesia with you.
  2. Anaesthesia. Anaesthesia is included in the listed package so that you are comfortable during the procedure.
  3. Examining the uterus. The hysteroscope is passed through the cervix and the cavity is gently filled with fluid, giving a clear view of the lining and the openings of the fallopian tubes.
  4. Treatment or biopsy if needed. Polyps, small fibroids inside the cavity, adhesions or a septum can often be treated at the same time, and tissue can be sent for analysis.
  5. Going home. After a short rest you can usually go home the same day.

Who is hysteroscopy for?

Hysteroscopy may be recommended if you are having difficulty conceiving, have had repeated unsuccessful IVF transfers or recurrent miscarriage, have heavy, irregular or post-menopausal bleeding, or if an ultrasound has shown a possible polyp, fibroid or abnormality of the uterine cavity. Your gynaecologist or fertility doctor will confirm whether it is right for you.

After the treatment

Period-like cramping and light spotting for a few days are common. Many doctors advise avoiding intercourse, tampons, baths and swimming for a short time afterwards; your clinic will give you personal aftercare instructions and explain when any biopsy results will be ready.
