Colposcopy in Greece
Colposcopy is a minimally invasive examination of the cervix, vagina and vulva under magnification. It is usually the next step after an abnormal smear or a positive HPV test, and helps identify abnormal changes early, with targeted biopsies taken when needed.

What is Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a closer look at the cervix using a colposcope, a magnifying instrument with a bright light. The colposcope stays outside the body, and the examination is similar to having a smear test, just longer and more detailed.
The doctor applies mild solutions to the cervix that make abnormal cells show up more clearly. If an area looks abnormal, a small tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken so it can be examined in a laboratory.
How the procedure works
- Consultation. The gynaecologist reviews your screening results and history and explains the examination.
- Positioning. As with a smear test, a speculum is gently inserted so the cervix can be seen.
- Magnified examination. The cervix, and if needed the vagina and vulva, are examined through the colposcope after applying solutions that highlight abnormal areas.
- Targeted biopsy if needed. If an area looks abnormal, a small sample is taken from exactly that spot.
- Results and next steps. The doctor explains what they saw and what happens next, including when any biopsy results will be ready.
Who is colposcopy for?
Colposcopy is usually recommended after an abnormal cervical screening (smear or Pap test), a positive high-risk HPV test, or if the cervix looks abnormal during a routine examination. Many women choose a private colposcopy to avoid waiting for an appointment at home. Your gynaecologist will confirm whether it is right for you.
After the treatment
Most women carry on with normal activities the same day. If a biopsy was taken, light spotting or a brownish discharge for a few days is common, and doctors usually advise avoiding intercourse and tampons for a short time. Your clinic will give you personal aftercare instructions.
